Experience real-time procedures carried out by experts from top European clinics in the Live from the Clinic sessions. The sessions will demonstrate bronchoscopy, paediatric and physiology procedures and will be followed by an interactive question and answer session, offering participants the opportunity to learn a variety of techniques and discuss each procedure’s application and effectiveness.

Nurses and respiratory specialist nurses are a key part of the allied respiratory professional community, and they are involved in almost all care programmes for patients with respiratory diseases. In keeping with the World Health Organization’s Year of the Nurse and Midwife campaign, we are delighted to share Congress programme highlights for nurses chosen by Andreja Šajnić, Chair of the ERS Nurses Group (09.03).

As you will not be travelling to Congress this year, in support of this year’s Healthy Lungs for Life campaign, we challenge you to count up your kilometres during September and see if you can run, walk, cycle or swim your way to one of our previous or future Congress destinations instead! Choose a target to aim for; this could be the distance you would travel to an ERS Congress or you could choose one of our set distances.

ERS joins European Public Health Alliance partners in urging EU institutions and leaders to act quickly on cuts to the EU4Health Programme budget. The proposed €9.4 billion EU4Health Programme, featuring double funding from Next Generation EU and the Multiannual Financial Framework, has been significantly reduced to €1.7 billion, jeopardising the EU’s ability and ambition to strengthen healthcare systems and public health protection across EU countries.

Professors Pierantonio Laveneziana and Paolo Palange present the latest CME online module which focuses on the interpretation of cardiopulmonary exercise test results. The module includes a discussion of how these results correlate with physiological factors in patients with common cardiopulmonary diseases characterised by exercise intolerance and unexplained exertional dyspnoea.

ERS Monograph case study: how would you treat this patient?
A 74-year-old man with COPD and atrial flutter presented with progressively shortened breath on effort. Progressive dyspnoea due to COPD was diagnosed and the long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) indacaterol was prescribed. Symptoms improved but atrial flutter worsened ( see above figure - view/download in full). LABA was discontinued and there was temporary recovery of normal sinus rhythm. However, palpitation with cardiac arrythmia persisted, so catheter ablation was performed. Following this, atrial flutter was stable for 1 year but dyspnoea on effort due to COPD persisted. What is the optimal therapy for this patient’s dyspnoea on effort?
a) Bronchial thermoplasty
b) Inhaled corticosteroids
c) Inhaled LABA rechallenge
